Apply organic fertilizers & increase the productivity, growth and quality of plants

Why do plant need fertilizers?

Just like our bodies need nutrients to function and grow, so do plants. When plants growing, they need some necessary nutrients for proper growth.

Adding fertilizers can ensure the plants receive the nutrients they need at planting time and during the growing period. Fertilizers can have different benefits during plants different growing period.

Everything You Need To Know About Organic Fertilizer

If you are interested in growing organically, which we hope you are, then you should use organic fertilizers. Organic simply means it is related to, or derived from, living organisms and is not manufactured through chemicals.

Organic fertilizers provide the best nutrients and minerals for a healthy garden because they are naturally occurring. Man may attempt to replicate what nature provides with chemical “super fertilizers”, but it pales in comparison to the raw power of using what nature already gives us.

Benefits of Organic Fertilizers

Organic fertilizers are carbon-based compounds that increase the productivity and growth quality of plants. They have various benefits over chemical fertilizers, which include the following:

  • Non-toxic Food: Use of these organic fertilizers ensures that the food items produced are free of harmful chemicals. As a result, the end consumers who eat these organic products are less prone to diseases.

  • On-Farm Production: The majority of organic fertilizers can be prepared locally or on the farm itself. Hence, the cost of these fertilizers is much lower than the cost of chemical fertilizers.

  • Low Capital Investment: In addition to the on-farm production possibilities of organic fertilizers, organic fertilizers help in maintaining the soil structure and increasing its nutrient-holding capacity.

  • Fertility of Soil: Organic fertilizers ensure that the farms remain fertile for hundreds of years. Land located at the site of ancient civilizations, such as India and China, are still fertile, even though agriculture has been practiced there for thousands of years.

  • Safe Environment: These are bio-degradable and do not cause environmental pollution. But chemical fertilizers contaminate both the land and water, which causes diseases and is the force behind the extinction of a number of plant, animal, and insect species.

  • 100percentorganic Employment: Organic fertilizers are prepared locally and on a much smaller scale. As a result, the production of organic fertilizers leads to employment, especially in rural areas where employment opportunities can sometimes be bleak.

How to apply organic fertilizer:

The easiest way to apply organic fertilizers is to spread them on the soil surface or planting beds. Since most plant feeder roots are in the top few inches of the soil, there’s no need to dig the nutrients down deeply.

How much fertilizer you should apply:

One more advantage of applying organic fertilizer to your plants is that it will not harm your plant if you apply this in more or less quantity. A rough estimate is to apply organic fertilizer in home garden is 40-50 gm per plant or 100gm in1Kg soil.

Compost: One of the best features of organic gardening is the ability to locally produce the fertilizers, pesticides, and other organic ingredients. And the easiest among them is compost. You can prepare compost almost anywhere, even in your kitchen garden!

Agricultural scientists all over the world agree that compost is an excellent source of organic matter for garden plants.

Compost provides air, water, organic matter, and microorganisms to your plants, thus enhancing their growth. It also maintains a healthy atmosphere for the soil and hence keeps insects, plant diseases, and weeds away.

Vermicompost: It is an organic manure (bio-fertilizer) produced as the vermicast by earth worm feeding on biological waste material; plant residues.

This compost is an odorless, clean, organic material containing adequate quantities of N, P, K and several micronutrients essential for plant growth.

Vermicompost is a preferred nutrient source for organic farming. It is eco-friendly, non-toxic, consumes low energy input for composting and is a recycled biological product.

Neem cake: Neem cake must be applied to all types of plants as it maintain the overall health of the plant. It is organic manure that protects plant roots from nematodes, soil grubs and white ants probably due to its residual limonoid content.

It also acts as a natural fertilizer with pesticidal properties. Neem cake is widely used in India to fertilize paddy, cotton and sugarcane. Usage of neem cake have shown an increase in the dry matter in Tectona grandis (Teak), Acacia nilotica (Gum Arabic), and other forest trees.

Neem seed cake also reduce alkalinity in soil, as it produces organic acids on decomposition. Being totally natural, it is compatible with soil microbes, improves and rhizosphere microflora and hence ensures fertility of the soil.

Neem Cake improves the organic matter content of the soil, helping improve soil texture, water holding capacity, and soil aeration for better root development.

Stear Meal: A balanced source of N, P, K, and some Sulfur. It is one of the best balanced organic npk fertilizer.

There are three numbers on the front of every bag or bottle of fertilizer. The numbers are always in the same order and stand for the percentage by weight of the N-P-K or Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium contained in the fertilizer.

Each of these is necessary for healthy plant growth and development. Read more about fertilizer numbers here.

For example, a bag of all-purpose organic fertilizer might carry these numbers, 5-5-5. The first number indicates nitrogen, which promotes lush, green growth and overall plant health.

A fertilizer high in nitrogen is a good choice for leafy vegetables grown in containers, such as lettuce and Swiss chard. Natural sources high in this nutrient include blood meal and liquid fish emulsion.

The second number indicates phosphorous, which is used to develop healthy roots and is necessary for fruit and flower development.

Blooming plants, like tomatoes, peppers and most ornamentals, benefit from nutrient solutions rich in phosphorous, especially when they are ready to set buds. Organic fertilizers known for their phosphorous content include bone meal, seabird guano and many liquid blends.

The third number is potassium, which is necessary for stem growth and overall plant vigor. Potassium is used especially on root crops such as carrots, beets and potatoes, but also on young trees during the fall to encourage strong roots during the winter months.

Sources of organic potassium include sul-po-mag (sulfate of potash magnesia), greensand, and many liquid fertilizers.
