The overall fertility and viability of the soil is a vital point in any gardening rather than the application of fertilizers as quick fixes.

But your soil may be deficient in certain nutrients. As well may not have excellent soil structure.

Unless you have lucked into the perfect soil, you have to make it better for gardening.

When to fertilize plants ?

1. Potted or Container plants :

  • If pot contains soil, fertilize once a month.

  • If it contains coco peat, fertilize twice a week.

  • If it is a mix of soil and coco peat, fertilize twice a month.

2. Ground or Bed plants :

If plants are growing in ground or beds, they require fertilizer once in 2-3 months.

Tips:

For potted plants, soil should be changed :-

  1. Once in a year
  1. If roots are seen outside.

How much Fertilizer to be used ?

For Fruit and Avenue trees : 200 to 300 gram in 1 kg of soil

For other plants : 100 to 150 gram in 1 kg of soil

Tips:

Most of the plants die due to over watering or over fertilizing.

1. Over watering

Heavy and poorly drained soils are susceptible to becoming waterlogged.

Roots growing in waterlogged soil may die because they cannot absorb the oxygen needed to function normally.

2. Over fertilizing

Fertilizer is not plant food, it is simply a collection of building blocks plants use to produce their own nutrients.

Over-fertilization often results in an unusually high accumulation of salts in the soil, as well as excess nitrogen.

Hence a proper care should be taken in both cases. You can refer Nurserylive.com for all the guidelines regarding watering, fertilization, temperature requirement, etc.

How to use ?

  • Soil should be pre-watered for direct application or for sprays also.

  • Also strong sunlight should be avoided at the time of fertilizing to prevent burning of plants. Better if used in the morning or evening.

Tips:

  • When adding fertilizer to potted plants use organic blends derived from many nutrient sources.
  • Organic fertilizers are just as effective as chemicals, but will not burn plants,
  • They supply the required macro nutrients (N-P-K) as well as a large selection of minerals, micro nutrients, amino acids and vitamins.
