Earth Day - What's so special about it!

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and every year, more than one billion people across the world mark the event by showing support for environmental protection.

Earth Day aims to encourage people across the world to be more environmentally friendly. This might mean increasing the amount they recycle, volunteering for a local green project or installing solar panels at their home.

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, in America. It was founded by former US senator Gaylord Nelson after he saw the enormous 1969 oil spill in California,US.

Earth Day this year is even more special as the landmark Paris Agreement is scheduled to be signed by the United States, China, India and some 120 other countries. This signing satisfies a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.According to the European Commission, the agreement ‘sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2C’.
