Football Lily : Grow a ball of 'fire' in pot

Football Lily

For flashy, spherical, red blossoms indoors or out, the blood lily is a rare and unusual South African container plant.

The flower is also known as the Monsoon Lily and the Fireball in India.

The blooms are big with red/ pink spikes and yellow specks at the ends and lasts for about a week.

The leaves are smooth and dark green in colour and fresh ones appear after flowering.

It’s best to grow them in pots. Plant the bulbs with their necks just at or a little above soil level, taking care not to damage the fleshy roots.

You can also root prune them each year to maintain a convenient size. Alternatively, for mature plants, remove just the top layer of soil in the pot and replace this with fresh compost each spring.

Buy ready to use nutrient rich soil

In general use a soil-based compost placed over a generous layer of drainage material such as earthenware crocks, pebbles or gravel. Water and feed regularly, especially while plants are bearing flowers and fruit, when a high-potash fertilizer is recommended.
