Govt proposes Rs 1,000cr fund to plant trees along highways

The road transport and highways ministry is likely to set up a first of its kind Rs 1,000-crore green fund for 2016-17 to be utilised for plantation along the highways.

Officials said the ministry has set a target of greening about 10,000 kilometres of existing national highways during the financial year by planting fruit-bearing trees and shrubs.

1% of the project cost will be transferred to a green corpus which will be utilised anywhere across the country and local community, self help groups, and registered NGOs would be empanelled for it.

Keen on transforming the NHs network into green corridors to minimise pollution, the ‘Green Fund’ is the brainchild of Transport Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari, who is confident that once kick-started, the policy will not only create huge number of jobs but also contribute significantly to the economic growth.
