Care instructions for growing fruit in containers

Fruit in containers is usually a little more hassle than growing fruit in the open ground. Do keep the following in mind:

  • Position fruit plants in full sun
  • Water generously but allow the compost’s surface to dry out before the next watering, without it becoming bone dry
  • Leave hardy fruit outdoors over winter
  • Peaches and apricots can be covered with a lean-to shelter from autumn to late winter to protect them from rain-splash and potential peach leaf curl
  • To avoid the roots becoming pot bound, re-pot every year or alternate years after leaf fall. Once in its final pot, a plant can be root-pruned every other year with 30 per cent of the compost refreshed. In intervening years, replace the top layer of compost
  • Fruit grown in pots is pruned just the same way as fruit grown in the open ground
  • For the first two or three seasons, let the tree flower, but pinch off developing fruit. If the tree bears fruit too soon, it will not establish sufficient roots and wood strength. It may grow lopsided, new branches may not develop, and the tree eventually may break.

You can also root prune them each year to maintain a convenient size. Alternatively, for mature plants, remove just the top layer of soil in the pot and replace this with fresh compost each spring.

Buy ready to use nutrient rich soil

In general use a soil-based compost placed over a generous layer of drainage material such as earthenware crocks, pebbles or gravel. Water and feed regularly, especially while plants are bearing flowers and fruit, when a high-potash fertilizer is recommended.
